Satellite Worlds and the Bali Status Quo
After reading a story in the Australian Financial Review about the Bali digital nomad community yesterday, I decided to take a look at PARQ, north of Ubud.
The owners of PARQ Ubud bill the place on their website as a city of the future. The article billed it as a Russian and Ukrainian enclave, full of digital nomads, setting up camp in Bali to escape the war in their East European neighborhood. The place is enormous. Someone obviously spent a lot of dollars or rubles to put it together, but I didn’t feel threatened by it, nor by the people there. In fact, it’s all rather suburban, like a shopping mall with accommodation, and anyone, as far as I could see, was welcome to enter. The smiling security guards with automatic weapons slung over their shoulders walking past when we got inside obviously weren’t there for us, but I did wonder for whom.
It’s a complex of apartments, swimming pools and restaurants. There’s also a flash gym. But the main thing is the peaceful people. There’s no aggression, just people going about their business – most probably digital business like everywhere nowadays. There’s even a hint of sadness at these people’s plight.
There are other complexes around the island inhabited by Australians, French or Germans, maybe not as big, and like Parq, I wouldn’t feel threatened either.
Bali has an inclusive environment that welcomes all to its shores. Just like Aussie bogans or Pommy hooligans everyone has to learn the local way and feel the local energy if they want to settle here. I expect these new settlers will eventually do the same.
The world and Bali is changing now at a rapid pace and there is no holding it back. Fortunately, we have a banjar system on this island that will keep the status quo the same as it has been for centuries, as was seen with recent deportations of unruly wannabe new settlers.
At sunset there weren’t so many people around the complex. A friend said there were more punters about at lunch. We took off down the hill for dinner in town and had a pleasant evening in Ubud.

Robin Schulz drops surprise gig at Red Ruby Bali
German DJ producer Robin Schulz was on holiday in Bali recently and was seen buzzing around the island with his girlfriend and in particular, one Saturday night in Red Ruby – a notoriously funky, late-night club in Petitenget.
That Saturday night the gold- and platinum-certified hit-maker arrived with a posse of friends, to no less than a masquerade party – as you can see in the video below.
They first occupied the Red Room; a separate mini-club room washed in the color red. It’s a bit like a karaoke room, to one side of the bar, which doesn’t see a lot of guests normally, but the perfect spot for celebs to hide from the madding crowd. There the gang got Moet fired up and further into the mood.
According to someone in the know, he got so fired up with the atmosphere of the club that he asked to get up and spin some tracks.
It was like 1.40am and the bar was maybe 70% full, the same source told The Beat.
Schultz, who normally plays in front of thousands at Tomorrowland and other huge festivals around the world, said the club came recommended from Stella Bossi and Boris Brejcha, who were also recently in town, and also reminded him of underground Berlin clubs. Clubs he obviously loves to dive in to.
“He just felt he needed to play, and after a moment’s consideration he was up – and he dropped like 5-7 tracks of his own productions or remixes. All super known megahits, bangers, all underground houses, no EDM,” our source related.
The crowd went wild as the buzz enveloped the room. Robin Schulz is a mega star and showed it’s not just hype and just how good a DJ he is and had the crowd eating out of his hand as soon as he got behind the decks with his crew in support.
As you can see from the snippets of the video we gleaned off the web from that night he really knows how to get the party going, even in a small club and the crowd, who couldn’t quite believe what was happening before their eyes, was going nuts.

BALI’S GREATEST GUITAR EXPO IS BACK SOON
After a successful first edition of the Guitar Expo at Hard Rock Hotel Bali in 2019, the event is returning again on October 29th – 30th, 2022. The Hard Rock Hotel Guitar Expo aims to cultivate an appreciation for musicians and strengthen the community through music.
Guitar Expo is a must-attend event that presents a stellar line-up of electric and acoustic guitar makers, vintage dealers, and exhibitors of related guitar gear. On display are a variety of guitars, basses, electrics, acoustic guitars, and other types of musical instruments. In addition to concerts and jam sessions, the Hard Rock Guitar Expo will also feature a guitar clinic and rock guitar competitions for participants of various ages. The competition is free to enter and the period for submitting applications will begin on October 1st and continue until October 20th, 2022.
All of the participants will be vying for the opportunity to take home the grand prize, the Heritage Electric Guitar. The winner of the competition will not only receive a number of fantastic prizes, but they will also have the opportunity to perform at Centerstage on the last day of the Guitar Expo. The jury will consist of two judges; the lead guitarist of Lolot Band, Donnie Lesmana and Sugix Anantra; the 1st winner of Ibanez Flying Fingers 2018.
All are experienced composers, arrangers, and performers. JRX will host a coaching clinic in addition to his one-of-a-kind performance that will take place on October 30.
“This event provides a platform for emerging guitarists to showcase their talent, connect with other artists in the community, and potentially win some great prizes,” said Shane Coates, the General Manager of Hard Rock Hotel Bali.
The Hard Rock Guitar Expo is indeed a unique opportunity that brings together not only the local music community but also music fans from all over the world, with a particular focus on those who are passionate about guitars. STAR-STUDDED LINEUP FOR APRIL AT WHITE ROCK BEACH CLUB
White Rock Beach Club has announced their DJ lineup for a special string of shows through April with some of the most sought-after DJs in the music industry on the bill, including ÖWNBOSS, Central Cee, Weird Genius, Whisnu Santika, and Deniz Koyu.
OWNBOSSknown for his explosive beats and electrifying performances, will be kicking off the event on April 16th. He is currently signed under Tiësto’s music label Musical Freedom. On April 22nd, Central Cee, one of the hottest rising stars in the UK music scene, will take the stage with his infectious energy and catchy hooks. His track “Doja” was certified Gold and has had over 365m streams on Spotify.
Indonesia’s own Weird Genius will also be making an appearance. The popular trio known for blending traditional Indonesian music with modern electronic beats will be performing on April 23rd. Next evening, April 24th, Vishnu Santikaa rising star in the Asian EDM scene, will be bringing his signature blend of progressive EDM house and trance to the White Rock Beach Club stage.
Closing out the series on April 28th is Turkish-German DJ, Deniz Koyuwho has made a name for himself with his unique blend of progressive and electro house music.

The Complete Party and Clubbing Guide to Canggu
A quick guide on where to go on any particular night in the Canggu area
First, every sunset most of the Canggu community heads to the beach to chill out for the last hour of the day. There are a whole bunch of choices, which you can find on this link, but what we are talking about on this page is the after-dark nightlife of Canggu. Read on friends.
After Covid things in Canggu have changed a lot in some ways, but haven’t changed much at all in others. Old Man’s was gone for a while, but is now back with a new look, just opening again in August, and a lot more has come and gone too.
When it comes to parties, you are still going to find something going on every night of the week. Disguised as a large pizza joint (the pizza is incredible btw), Luigi’s Hot Pizza kicks off the start of the week with the PNNY crew every monday night from 8 – 12pm playing eclectic house beats to jackin’ techno. If you are up for a late-night boogie, head down to the beach end of Batu Bolong any night of the week, where Sandbar is crowded pumping the hip hop commercial sounds from around midnight. Desk x Designer used to be down that way but are now in the Echo Beach area and open till very late (now Thurs to Sunday). And new bars on the block, Miss Fish is pretty much busy every night with DJs and the fashionable Canggu crowd in attendance.
Tuesdays are quite laid-back with the main action happening at Shady Pig with their Disco Biscuit night from about 10pm, or down the road at Miss Fish.
Wednesdays are one of the biggest nights of the week. With mounds of people all over the streets. Wednesday is the biggest night at Old Man’s, get down there for the beer pong comp. Loads of fun, loads of people. backyards can also pull a crowd, across the road from the Tugu Hotel. Mason Backroom, is where the more sophisticated crowd head for groovy house tunes from 9pm – 3am. Later at night you can end up at Sandbar where commercial music goes on until about 4 – 5am or Designer desk till late for underground sounds.
By the time your hangover from Wednesday is over, it’ll be Thursday night and the gnarliest spot on a Thursday is pretty Poisons. Think backyard skate bowl meets European dungeon nightclub. Tattoos, skate bowl action and live DJs playing everything from rock & roll, hip hop to techno. Walk over to Black Cat Mini Market next door and check out their fridge in the corner for a cheeky surprise. Designer desk till late.
If you’re looking for a dope Friday night party, there are several options! Black Sands is always busy on Friday evenings with special price brews. The Lawn Friday nights go from 9pm till 1am with half price on selected drinks and a range of disco, house, RnB and hip-hop tunes. God lights up the night with live stand-up comedy every Friday evening. Morabito Art Villa in Berawa has a regular Friday evening party with big name, mainly underground, DJs. vault is a safe bet on a Friday later, always supplying great house/techno music. The crowd can also be found at The Shady Pig, Miss Fish or Mason Backroom sipping cocktails and moving to the beat’s from 10pm till late. Real Techno can be heard and absorbed at Designer desk until 5am. And as usual, Sandbar picks up the late-night party people to end another wild night on the beach in Canggu.
Saturdays nights usually depend on whether there are any headliners at the clubs. One of the biggest parties on the island are La Brisa‘s Basement Love x PNNY or Escape events, bringing some of the most renown house & techno acts to the beach club on a bi-weekly schedule (sometimes longer), and other visiting performers. The Shady Pig, Miss Fish and Mason Backroom are all good bets and usually pull crowds on a Saturday from 10pm till late. Regular events include Vault’s hip hop nights with the PNNY crew, and Designer desk with their hard techno.
Sunday’s are actually a lot of fun. God are the pioneers of Sunday nights in Canggu. They boast beer on tap, a large crowd of expats, tourists and locals with live music action. Deus also hosts Tuesday nights with free tattoos and tacos. Something different is the drag queens Bingo Sunday night at Fat Mermaids. Or Mason Backroom opens from 7pm. Later you can head to the beach at Sandbar till you drop.

Road To Now Playing Festival 2023 next Tuesday at Peninsular Island, Nusa Dua
Next Tuesday ‘Road To Now Playing Festival 2023’, with top bands Weezer, Noah, Fourtwnty and The Adams will rock Peninsula Island, Nusa Dua, Bali.
The Now Playing Festival is scheduled to return to Bandung in 2023. In the lead up to the main event next year, the ‘Road to Now Playing Festival 2023’ is set to come to life on 29th November 2022 with performances from American Rock band, Weezer, and Indonesian top bands including Noah, Fourtwnty, and The Adams.
The Project Manager of Road to Now Playing Festival 2023, Jenny Steffany told The Beat, “We chose Peninsula Island for Road to Now Playing Festival because the island location is so exciting and creates a great atmosphere. It is one of the premier live music locations right now on the island. It’s the perfect spot for us before heading to our main event in Bandung. In 2023 we will present several different types of music festivals in one, with more variety of music, bigger and more memorable than before. The event will be held for two weeks and national and international musicians will perform.”
Now Playing Festival is an annual music festival which has been held in Bandung since 2019. It was the biggest music festival in Bandung then, inviting 14 bands who performed on two stages with 23,000 visitors. In June 2022, the Now Playing Festival returned after the pandemic for three days, this time with 33 bands on two stages. It brought together various genres of music with 90,000 attendees.
Peninsula Island, is one of the two famed small islands just off Nusa Dua beach with a total area of five hectares. Prior to the pandemic, the open space had already become a venue often used for sporting and music events.
Road to Now Playing Festival 2023 tickets are on sale now from IDR 300,000 to IDR 1,100,000.
