Top American, Chinese defense officials vie for influence in Asia-Pacific

SINGAPORE (AP) — As the United States and China vie to establish new partnerships and expand influence with Asia-Pacific nations,…

SINGAPORE (AP) — As the United States and China vie to establish new partnerships and expand influence with Asia-Pacific nations, the top defense officials from both nations are preparing to try to win support this weekend from their regional counterparts, diplomats and leaders at a security forum in Singapore.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, whose country is a stalwart American ally in the Pacific, is to give the keynote address Friday evening to open the dialogue at the Shangri-La Hotel hosted by the International Institute for Strategic Studies think tank.

Albanese, whose country has angered Beijing with its agreement with Britain and the US, known as AUKUS, to obtain nuclear-powered submarines to address the perceived rising threat from China, said he would focus on Australia’s deepening engagement, as well as “shared opportunities and challenges” in the region.

“We want a region that is stable, peaceful, resilient and prosperous,” he said when his speech was announced.

This year’s dialogue comes amid a wide range of issues, including the war in Ukraine and its regional implications, including China’s support for Russia, the ongoing conflict in Myanmar, and growing tensions between China and the US and its allies over Beijing’s claim to the self -governing island of Taiwan.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin will open the day Saturday with an address on American “leadership in the Indo-Pacific,” according to the Pentagon, while China’s new defense minister, Li Shangfu, leads off the day Sunday with a speech on his country’s new security initiatives.

Austin began his trip to the region in Japan, whose prime minister, Fumio Kishida, has been one of the most outspoken leaders in Asia against the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Kishida has ramped up Japan’s defense spending, and cautioned others at the Shangri-La forum last year that “Ukraine today may be East Asia tomorrow.”

China has refused to criticize Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and has blamed the US and NATO for provoking Moscow. During a trip in April to Moscow, Li pledged to expand military cooperation, military-technical ties and the arms trade with Russia.

“We will certainly take them to a new level,” he said at the time.

On the sidelines of the conference in Singapore, Austin plans to meet with “key leaders to advance US defense partnerships across the region in support of our shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific anchored in ASEAN centrality,” the Defense Department said, referring to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Following the conference, Austin travels to New Delhi to meet with his Indian counterpart for talks on issues including expanding “operational cooperation between the US and Indian militaries.”

Like the US, many of its allies have been increasing their focus on the Indo-Pacific, and the conference brought together many other top officials, including defense ministers from Britain, Germany, Sweden, Canada, the Netherlands, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. Ukraine’s defense minister is also expected to attend.

Austin asked Li to meet with him in Singapore, but China turned down the request, the Pentagon press secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder told reporters in Washington.

“The department strongly believes in the importance of maintaining open lines of military-to-military communication between Washington and Beijing to ensure that competition does not veer into conflict,” he said.

Li, a general who was named defense minister in March, is under American sanctions that are part of a broad package of measures against Russia — but predate its invasion of Ukraine — which were imposed in 2018 over Li’s involvement in China’s purchase of combat aircraft and anti-aircraft missiles from Moscow.

The sanctions, which broadly prevented Li from doing business in the United States, did not prevent him from holding official talks, Ryder said.

Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Tan Kefei said Austin’s offer of talks in Singapore was rejected because the US “disregarded China’s concerns and created artificial obstacles.”

“The US side should take practical actions to show sincerity and correct mistakes, so as to create the necessary conditions and proper atmosphere for communication and exchange between the two sides,” he said, while not directly mentioning the sanctions or other issues.

Even before Li’s appointment, multiple Defense Department requests for talks involving key leaders were rejected, with more than a dozen requests having gone unanswered or declined since 2021, according to a senior American defense official who spoke on condition of anonymity to provide information on private discussions .

In Japan on Thursday, Austin stressed the need for regular communications and open channels, noting a recent incident in which a Chinese fighter jet flew aggressively close to an American reconnaissance plane over the South China Sea.

“I’m concerned about at some point having an incident that could very, very quickly spiral out of control,” Austin said. “I would welcome any opportunity to engage with leadership.”

Despite Li’s refusal of the invitation, China might not want to be seen as the non-communicative party in regional eyes so some sort of bilateral talks could still take place over the course of the weekend, said Euan Graham, senior fellow for Indo-Pacific Defense and Strategy with IISS.

“I wouldn’t rule out a US-China meeting yet,” he said.

Molly Shannon makes a superstar return as host

Hey there — it’s SNL in Review time, and this week we have a special host. one of Saturday Night Live‘s happy graduates have come home. It’s nearly impossible to consider the history of prominent female cast members without evoking Molly Shannon. From “Delicious Dish” to “Mary Katherine Gallagher” to “Dog Show,” her character work represented a key contribution to SNL during a time when the show was finally beginning to give female voices more prominence.

I am joined tonight by former SNL cast member Robin Duke, who is co-starring in shelved, which just premiered on CTV. On Shannon, she notes: “I love her I’m 50 character, Sally O’Malley. It’s so true and great. It’s out there, I like how bold she is with her characters. She’s a good actress too, which helps really. As big as her character can be, her acting grounds them. There’s a truth there that is really identifiable.”

Exactly! With Duke as an obvious precursor, there’s an argument that Shannon’s boldness, alongside the likes of Cheri Oteri, liberated future women in the cast to be as wild and brash as any of the male performers. Do you get Kristen Wiig or Kate McKinnon without Shannon paving the way? I do not see it. And since SNL, Shannon has carved a wonderful niche for herself on TV and in independent dramas. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is the only one in a similar lane. Right now she’s appearing in the third season of The Other Two as well as in the Showtime comedy series I Love That for You alongside fellow former SNL alum Vanessa Bayer. She is also co-starring in A Good Person opposite Florence Pugh.

NBC Molly Shannon hosts ‘SNL’

Yes, she is indeed a SUPERSTAR! Quite the range. Keep scrolling below and find out what’s good for you.

Cold Open

In honor of Easter this weekend, we join Jesus at the Last Supper. The iconic painting comes alive with Mikey Day as Christ and Molly Kearney as Judas. “A famous, wonderful man arrested for no reason at all,” interjects James Austin Johnson’s Donald Trump. Ah, that’s one of those cold opens. again. Trump keeps comparing himself to “Jesus of Azkaban” with Ron DeSantis as his Judas. As he goes on to note the rest of the students are frozen behind him.

This sketch has a lot of potential, but even with JAJ’s very amusing Trump take, I’m not sure I can recommend it.

Monologues

Shannon last hosted back in 2007, but she’s since returned to the show a few times to comeo. “It’s so great to be back,” she says in her monologue, reflecting on her kids and the memoir she put out last year. It was a frank book about some of the troubles she’s experienced throughout her life. This leads to an excellent Broadway rendition, in which Shannon calls on various cast members to air their issues. Kearney says they are not in the show much; Bowen Yang is attracted to his therapist; Kenan Thompson is addicted to buying roles; and Andrew Dismukes still dresses like a little boy.

Shannon goes beyond the cast for admissions from the audience. Lorne Michaels alert! Shannon calls on him but he doesn’t have any problems. But Martin Short ran out Ozempic. Nice use of the cast, a Superstar call-out, and a fun guest cameo. Watch this!

“Valets”

Dismukes is coaching three new recruits (JAJ, Shannon, and Thompson) on the ideal way to retrieve a customer’s keys. He has three core rules to follow: lil joke, lil bow, lil jog. You won’t believe this, but the recruits just don’t get it! JAJ makes a tiny penis joke. Shannon says she was catfished by a middle schooler. “Actually I’m in love with you,” she keeps confessing. Thompson talks too low.

“Netflix Live Promotion: Jeannie Darcy”

Oh hell yes, they brought back Jeannie Darcy! Debuting way back in 2000, Darcy was an uninspired stand up comedian with a mullet. Her catchphrase, in case you can’t tell is: “Don’t get me started, don’t even get me started.”

I love this. It’s a fun, sly spoof, and worked perfectly in this context (riffing on Chris Rock’s live special). Here she is back in 2007. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind if Darcy Shannon’s Mr. Saturday Night style recurring character.

“Pregnant Co-worker”

Susie is glowing in maternal instinct. She is excited to start maternity leave too – until a loud audible fart diffuses her womb. This is dark! Check it out.

Please Don’t Destroy’s “Molly Shannon 2K23”

Molly2k23 is a game about Shannon’s life. Discovering this, the real deal falls into a rabbit hole.

I like this a lot! We have our second Superstar reference of the night.

The Daniels play

Devon Walker is excited his girlfriend has published a play. But to his horror, the show, A Year of a Thousand Men, is about her extensive sexual history and true feelings about him. In her eyes, he’s a dork. He was the 1000th man. Joe Jonas has a small role here.

Jonas Brothers – first musical performance

“Waffle House” is the second and final single from the Jonas Brothers’ sixth studio album, The Albums. The song “was born from a simple but powerful idea: When you sit down with the people that matter most, anything is possible. This song isn’t about a restaurant, it’s about coming together with the people you love,” the group told Good MorningAmerica.

“Weekend Update”

Subjects include the Harlow Crow-Justice Clarence Thomas scandal, and Trump’s arrangement. A bit muted tonight, though Michael Che is increasingly unhinged. This week, DeSantis has escalated his feud with Disney, threatening to impose taxes on its hotels and roads that lead to the theme park. To comment: Jafar from Aladdin (Which). Turns out a lot of Disney characters are gay. He has pointed words for “the boy” DeSantis.

Earlier this week, Angel Reese (Punkie Johnson) said neither she, nor her team, would be visiting the White House after the Tigers defeated the University of Iowa Hawkeyes 102-85 to win their first NCAA women’s basketball national championship. Reese also made a gesture towards Caitlin Clark of the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Your coworker who is busy doing nothing Crystal (Heidi Gardner) also appears. She is criticized but is on to discuss a recent Labor Department report regarding increased in-person work. “Hello Caesar,” she frantically says, greeting her salad. First time she’s eaten in a month! Very funny reveal on her job: she is Che’s assistant!

“Drugs Commercial”

A spoof of commercials that use euphemisms and upbeat settings/music to suggest they treat vaginal issues. Shannon is concerned that her costars’ energy levels are “mid” while filming an ad for Vagerted. “This product sounds really awful,” says Ego Nwodim. They were wrong in the monologue, there’s actually a lot of Kearney tonight!

Jonas Brothers – second musical performance

Another recently released song from their latest album, “Walls,” is the last track. The Jonas Brothers previously appeared on the show in 2009 and 2019. (And “The Oldest Jonas” remains a classic.)

Sally O’Malley

The Jonas Brothers want a new choreographer. They are not a teen band anymore and want a more mature stage act. Cue, to applause, Sally O’Malley. She’s still kicking – literally!

“The grand canyon has nothing on me!” says O’Malley as she hikes up her outfit. Still proud after all these years. Oh boy, legacy act/victory lap time, the Jonas Brothers show up also dressed up as O’Malley. “Kick, stretch…”

Okay, I love Sally. But shoehorning this as a 10-to-1? This feels rushed and half assed.

“CNN App”

People have based their entire personality around hating Trump. The anxiety over the indictment is too much. “In your mind he’s already in jail,” the app reassures.

I like Shannon as Maggie Haberman. And Sherman as Wolf Blitzer. I’m generally a bit underwhelmed by all this, but it’s a funny concept.

Final thoughts

-What did you think? Vote here or weigh in below!

-I feel underwhelmed. This never really got its foot, right?

-Go watch shelved! Thanks again to Robin Duke. She noted to me that the transition from a sketch background to a sitcom can be “difficult. I have to be very careful with this character [in Shelved]. I need to get the laughs out of an honest place. Not a judgmental or critical place – it must be identifiable. That kind of character on stage could be a wackadoo, but that’s not what I’m doing on shelved. I’m trying to find who that person is, and what if it was me? How would I be in that situation? I would want a sense of humor about where I was, but also defensive, which I think that character is. She doesn’t want anyone to get close to her right now. She has a lot of walls up. There’s a bit more history behind this character than I would do in a sketch.”

Thai transgender model Poyd Treechada Petcharat, who is colloquially known as Thailand’s “most beautiful transgender woman,” has tied the knot with her businessman beau in an extravagant Peranakan wedding.

The actor shared the news on Instagram along with their wedding photos.

The intimate ceremony was reportedly held at Baan Ar-Jor, a heritage hotel, museum and restaurant owned by the Oak’s family.

Poyd wore an embroidered traditional Peranakan wedding dress with a flower crown that was handmade by artisans from Thailand’s Ranong province and antique jewelry. Oak wore a western tuxedo with two gold brooches. They reportedly spent about 20 million baht (approximately $580,000) for their traditional wedding costumes, which took months to complete.

Issho Izakaya | Japanese Izakaya in Marina Bay

issho izakaya should be a fairly familiar name for those who love their Japanese food. Having 2 established outlets at Great World City and Singpost Centre, issho izakaya opens its third outlet at One Fullerton, with alfresco sitting, normal indoor sitting and private dining rooms with the same extensive menu that it offers at its other outlets.

issho izakaya 01
We started off with their Salmon Salad ($19.90) and Hotate Carpaccio from their Zensai selection. The salmon salad is paired with a carrot dressing – light and unique, different from the usual sesame dressing.
issho izakaya 02
The Hotate Carpaccio ($22.90) is a great starter option with slices of creamy swirls topped with seaweed and tobiko on a bed of onions and a slightly sweet sauce.
issho izakaya 03
The Sashimi Moriawase ($44 for 15pcs) was the most theatrical dish with smoke billowing and the chef’s pick of fresh slices of fish arranged nicely on top of a “boat”. This seems to be a go-to for those who prefer to leave it to the chef instead of deciding the particular sashimi.
issho izakaya 04
We also tried some of their sushi options – Otoro, Akami, Aburi Salmon and Salmon. Similar to the sashimi moriawase, sushi sets are also available if you want to have something fuss-free.
issho izakaya 05
Their makimonos are popular with the younger crowd, in particular the dragon maki ($19.80) and aburi salmon & cream cheese maki ($19.80). The former is artfully plated to resemble a dragon.
issho izakaya 06
Those who love Kushiyaki can watch the live action of their kushiyaki being grilled. During my visit to the new outlet at One Fullerton, I tried different kushiyakis from my usual orders at the Great World City outlet that I frequent. We had the Wagyu, Ebi Mentai, Hotate Mentai, Salmon Belly Cheese and Buta Bara (ie pork belly). Amongst these, I like the Hotate Mentai and Wagyu. Although the wagyu looks unassuming, the meat is rather fatty so it’s best to order in moderation and you can always add on once you’re done!
issho izakaya 07
Other cooked dishes that we tried include the Kaki Okonomiyaki ($15.80) and Hotate Cheese Yaki ($15.80). We were told that these are popular options with families as these are good for sharing.
issho izakaya 08
To wrap things up, we had the Warabi Mochi ($7.80) and Matcha Lava Cake with Ice-Cream ($13.50).
issho izakaya 09
The latter is on the sweeter side perhaps to cater to kids.

issho Izakaya also offers sake pairing with its food and they are offering a promotion for their draft sake at $50 for two 120ml glasses – the draft sake is light, hence easy to drink and can pair with sweet, savory and spicy food alike.

Budget per person: $35 to $45 per person

Wagatomo | Festive Omakase Menu – Wagyu-centric dishes

Wagatomo | Festive Omakase Menu – Wagyu-centric dishes

We made a second visit to Wagatomo in less than 2 months to try its Wagyu-centric festive omakase menu, where Chef Tomoyuki Kiga – the brain and chef behind Wagatomo – curates a tasting menu featuring some of the best dishes of Wagatomo.

Available only from 1 – 31 December, this nine-course menu is value-for-money and showcases the prized Wagyu cuts in various ways.

Wagatomo 01
Begin with the A5 Wagyu Pizza, a signature at Wagatomo. We tried this before during our previous visit so when we saw it on the Omakase menu, we knew it would mark a high start to the meal. Thin biscuit crusts are topped with slices of A5 Hida Gyu, complemented with ponzu mayo, pickled myoga (ginger flower) and yuzu kosho cream and a touch of truffle oil.
Wagatomo 02
The second course – Moyashi (soya marinated beansprouts) is meant to whatever your appetite with the pomelo and tangy ume dressing.
Wagatomo 03
The third course – A5 Wagyu Tataki is a dish made using Kumamoto Gyu. Slices of prime beef are laced with roasted negs salsa and garlic cream, the latter adding a tad more savouriness to the dish. This beef is very tender and a tad more fatty.
Wagatomo 04
The fifth course serves up A5 Wagyu Senbei. Slow-cooked Shiretoko Gyu is served with Japanese nori senbei. The beef is soft from cooking long hours in controlled heat and is reminiscent of pulled beef. The charred jalapeño salsa adds a bit of punch and the crackers give an extra crunch.
Wagatomo 06
The next course is one of the non-beef dishes. Pillowy soft egg plant is roasted with sesame seeds and generously dressed with miso before mozzarella is shaved on top and left to melt. The sweet-salty combination is yummy but be careful when digging in as the roasted vegetable retains heat well.
Wagatomo 05
The mandatory greens come in the form of Brussels sprouts – fitting for this festive season. Deep fried before seasoning with citrus togarashi, these sprouts take on an added crispness that resembles crisps more than regular sprouts – perhaps because the leaves from the Brussels sprouts are separated before being fried. Addictive.
Wagatomo 07
The next course puts the spotlight on A5 Misuji blade steak cut of the 4% Miracle Gyu (known at both Wagatomo and Gyu-san, its sister restaurant). The prized cut from right under the shoulder blade is slow-cooked for six hours with a sansho spice rub for flavor and accompanied by charred onion puree. This beef is richly marbled with a full-bodied flavour, we enjoyed every piece of it.
Wagatomo 08
To fill you up, the A5 Gyu Don is also made from the 4% Miracle Beef. Slices of beef are lightly grilled to retain the juicy center with a runny egg atop the center of a bowl of fluffy Japanese pearl rice. Very hearty.
Wagatomo 09
The dessert is a deconstructed Mille Feuille. Salted yogurt ice-cream is served alongside figs, chestnut cream and light puff pastry. Eat each component individually then all together for different textures and flavours.

This omakase sharing menu is one of the more value-for-money menus that we’ve come across recently and definitely one for the beef-lovers to check out. Do book before heading down as you can expect the seats to fill up quickly!

Budget: $98++ per person (minimum 2 to dine)
